Multiple Citations of Excellence from the National Band Association, was the first recipient of the Zenon Hansen Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to Doane University, where he has also been recognized by the college’s student congress as the outstanding faculty member twice during his tenure. Gilbert has received several awards including Distinguished Service Awards from the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association and the Nebraska Music Educators Association. Currently he chairs the Recommended Music List Committee for the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association.ĭr.
He is a frequent guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States.
He is also a contributing scholar to the series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band and a contributing author to the book The Art of Band Interpretation. He is the Director of Instrumental Music conducting the Doane Concert Band and Community/Concert Band and the Doane Tiger Pep Band. Gilbert has enjoyed the longest tenure (twenty-nine years) in the 128-year history of the Doane University Band Program. Participants apply all of the above to the creation of a short list of meritorious repertoire suitable for their individual programs and needs.ĭr.Participants will develop familiarity with the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band Series (TMB) and the Teacher Resource Guides as supplementary material for their rehearsals and teaching.Participants will have the opportunity to interact with some quest composers.Participants will share with the class their knowledge of wind band literature.Participants will develop the ability to evaluate music according to criteria of musical merit.Students experience and identify some of the finest music composed for wind bands on every level.The final class project will to produce an annotated bibliography of pieces identified by class members. There will be a few schedule Zoom interactions including visits with composers Joni Greene, William Owens and Robert W. Primary activities will include experiences with the core wind band repertoire included in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series, discussions amongst course members share information about additional quality repertoire and creation of a curriculum tailored specifically to the needs of the band program of each course participant.
